Last week, I had enough of our dining table being completely taken over with work! Even though we had two desks in another room, we always ended up working at the table. It’s hard to feel a work/life balance when the table you’re supposed to have meals at is covered with laptops, keyboards, and notebooks full of to-do lists.
In attempt to make a change, we brought our kitchen table into our office and got rid of our desks. It’s like a breath of fresh air! Here are a few reasons why a dining table is a better fit for our home office right now…
- We can spread out…big time. As I’m writing this, the table is full of fabric swatches, my breakfast, notebooks and planners, measuring tapes, markers…you know how it goes! If this was in our dining room like usual, it would stress me out because I like having the table cleared for meals! Now, we can just leave our materials spread out, shut the door, and pick it up where we left off later.
- This area better suits our team of three. Before, we only had two desks in here. We work as a team in person at least once a week, so now we can all work in the office together.
- It feels more like a conference room. We have a white board lined up with the head of the table with our deadlines and daily lists, so we know exactly what’s happening every day. Again, not something I’d want in my dining room, but something I love having near my workspace!
I was inspired to try this by designer Brian Patrick Flynn, who talked about how he frequently uses dining tables in offices in this video.
