We let our garage get absolutely out of control this year. With the whirlwind of having our first baby, the garage just was not a priority! Since our projects tend to clutter the garage floor (aka an ever-growing pile of empty boxes, wood scraps, styrofoam, and pallets) we couldn’t even walk inside anymore. It was literally a safety hazard! It was time we got on top of our garage organization.
Since we do so many projects in our garage, everything was constantly getting covered in sawdust too. I was so sick of it! So when Jake asked me what I wanted for my birthday last month, I said I wanted to spend the whole day cleaning out the garage. Of course, it turned into a week-long organizing project including trips to Goodwill, the hazardous waste facility, listing things on OfferUp, and hiring a local junk-removal company. We ordered some cabinets with doors to keep the sawdust off of everything when we work. But it’s done now and it was absolutely worth the time and effort to get it all picked up!
Here’s what we started with (yikes):
We ordered three cabinets to test them out, and ended up buying three more the next day to continue the job. We filled up an entire Bagster full of trash, which we ended up hiring a private junk removal service to take away. (Check to see if Waste Management services your area before ordering; although I’m actually glad we had this massive bag to hold the trash even though WM doesn’t service ours.)
I love how they look like a big wall of lockers all together. The cabinets have hardware that mounts to the wall for extra safety. Also, the shelves can be adjusted inside however you’d like. They each come with their own unique key.
The cabinets come in this matte black color and a light silver color, and are available on Amazon prime.
We added a bit more storage along the top with these white bins from The Container Store, for things we only grab once a year like Christmas decor. We’ve had these for five years and they’ve held up great!
Here’s the cost breakdown for our garage organization:
cabinets (we used 6, they are $189 each) –$1,134
junk removal bag –$30
junk removal service –$275
toxic waste dropoff free
donation dropoff free
OfferUp Sales +$200
Total Project Cost $1239
I’m so happy with how it turned out, and would recommend these cabinets to anyone looking to tidy up their garage or shed!
